Mission Audio Recordings
These recordings were made during actual airstrike missions in Candlestick aircraft. The original tapes were on the then-new cassette tape decks wired directly into the intercom system of the C-123. All of the recorders were battery-operated, so a slowing of the taped voices and sounds can be heard in some of the recordings.
Some of the language used is sometimes rough and spoken quickly because of the tension of those flight missions.
TERMINOLOGY:
AAA: anti-aircraft artillery
A clip of 37: seven rounds of anti-aircraft artillery (AAA), with each round being 37 millimeters in diameter, has been spotted and is coming toward the airplane.
A clip of 57: five rounds of AAA, each of which are 57 millimeters in diameter.
Break right / Break left: rounds of AAA is coming directly toward the aircraft and the crew member who is watching those come toward the plane is telling the pilot (Aircraft Commander) to turn right or left (as directed) away from that threat.
